My mom is currently visiting, and we have been hitting the Silk Road.
My mom’s visit started with a missed connection, a six hour delay, and a suitcase that tried to holiday in Germany instead. Unfazed, my mom took a tour of the embassy, headed to a Korean lunch with my consular section colleagues, and attended a going away party for one of my neighbors, trying Uzbek plov and samsa for the first time.
The next day we visited Yunusobad Market and threw a diplomatic reception for 40 guests at our residence in honor of my saint’s day (imenden). At the end of the party my mom’s suitcase was delivered, to her enormous relief.
On Sunday we visited the craziest Central Asia flea market I have seen, and then took a road trip up to the reservoir in the mountains. Monday and today we enjoyed local restaurants, visited a mosque and museum, Independence Square and the Japanese Garden.
More adventure awaits, in Samarkand, in the EU, and in the Russian Federation…
